Razer is multi-faceted when it comes to creating top products for gamers. Not only have they produced wireless headsets, keyboards and even sleek book bags, they went out of their way to develop an alternative to the Xbox One Elite controller. That latest piece of Razer tech is the Wolverine Ultimate, a highly customizable gamepad that’s also compatible with PC’s. Grasping this beast of a controller will immediately clue you into one of its best features – its hefty feel. Holding the Wolverine Ultimate in your hands for hours never turns into an uncomfortable exercise. As for the overall look, this controller comes with a beautiful black and matte design. The multicolored buttons and Chroma RGB lighting adds that extra bit of cool factor, as well. Visually, the Wolverine Ultimate controller looks markedly better than the Xbox One Elite controller.
Getting the best out of this gamepad means customizing it to your benefit. Of course it comes with the your standard face buttons, D-Pad, analog sticks and shoulder buttons/triggers. Thankfully, those buttons all feel great. The face buttons deliver a satisfying click and the analog sticks feel extra responsive every time you tug them in a sharp direction. What makes this gamepad so special is its two pairs of programmable triggers on the back. These additional buttons/triggers can be easily changed to your liking via the remap button. While it may appear daunting at first, mapping your buttons is a simple and stress-free affair. It won’t take long at all to alter the sensitivity of both analog sticks and shoulder triggers.
Now that I’ve gotten through all the positives behind this controller, it’s time to acknowledge its problems. Wielding this controller can only be accomplished by hooking it up via a USB cable. It would’ve been nice to be able to enjoy the best parts of this controller wirelessly. As you should also know, this is a premium controller. Which means it should come as no surprise that its price point may be a bit too steep for some. It currently goes for $170 compared to the lower price point of the Xbox One Elite Controller ($160). The big ballers out there shouldn’t have any issue adding this controller to their collection. Others will probably scoff at having to pay top dollar just to have an extra gamepad in their possession.
- Having the option to remap buttons at will and mod other features via an app is great
- The buttons feel pretty good
- The controller feels sturdy and definitely looks impressive
- No wireless option is frustrating
- The price is a bit steep
