A shooting in Manhattan has left seven people dead this afternoon. The incident occurred at West Houston Street on the West Street bike path.

“The driver of a truck drove the wrong way down the West Side Highway bike path for several blocks on the lower west side of Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon, striking people and leaving up to six people dead, according to two senior law enforcement sources at the New York Police Department. The driver then exited the vehicle displaying imitation firearms and was shot by police, according to the NYPD,” CNN reports.

Witnesses in the area claim that the suspect, who is currently in police custody, was yelling “Allahu Akbar” which means “Allah is the greatest” in Arabic. Although the suspect’s name has not been released, sources say that the incident “is being investigated as terrorism,” according to CNN.

So far, no terrorist groups have come forward to claim responsibility, but the style of attack does seem uniform with the recent attacks in Europe.

If this incident proves to be an act of terrorism, it will be the first in New York City with casualties since September 11.
