If you haven’t finished binge-watching season 2 of Stranger Things, chances are you’ve made a solid dent in the hit Netflix series, even though it was just released on Friday.
Since the show first came out over a year ago, fans have grown increasingly curious about the lives of its stars, and for a while now, rumors have circulated that Charlie Heaton (who plays Jonathan Byers) is dating Natalia Dyer (who plays Nancy Wheeler) in real life.
Neither have confirmed the status of their relationship, but pictures snapped of the pair suggest there is definitely something going on between them.
Here’s what we know:
1. They Have Been Rumored to Be Dating for About a Year
Last November, a source said they saw Natalia and Charlie holding hands at a restaurant in Nashville. They then sat together at the 17th annual AFI Awards at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills.
In January of this year, Dyer and Heaton were seen catching a flight together at LAX. While they didn’t hold hands, ET reports that Heaton put his arm around Natalia at one point while were going through airport security. That same day, Heaton posted a hysterical Instagram of his feet in Natalia’s small shoes.
Earlier this month, the actors were seen holding hands in New York City.
2. Natalia Was in the ‘Hannah Montana’ Movie
Natalia Dyer has been acting for years.
She got her start in 2009, appearing in Hannah Montana: The Movie as Clarissa Granger. In 2011, she starred in The Greening of Whitney Brown, alongside Brooke Shields and Aidan Quinn.
In 2014, Dyer appeared in the film I Believe in Unicorns which premiered at SXSW.
Discussing booking the role of Nancy Wheeler with Harpers Bazaar last year, Natalia said, “The audition process was a fairly normal, fairly standard audition. I’m living in New York, and went in for the first audition and callbacks as well. It was mysterious. It was one of those things where you get sides [i.e. scenes] and you don’t really get the script at first. You don’t entirely know what’s going on, so you just go in there to make your best guess as to what they’re looking for. I do remember feeling not so good about either audition, coming out of them.”
3. Dyer Says She Can’t Choose If She’s Team Steve or Team Jonathan
Last September, Dyer spoke to Harpers Bazaar about her experience on the show.
Asked if she’s personally Team Steve or Team Jonathan, the actress said:
[Laughs] I don’t know! They’re both so dreamy. You know, it’s hard to say, because it’d be very different directions for Nancy. They’d be very different boys for her, very different relationships. It’s hard to say. I’m excited to find out where this goes. If she ends up with no one, that’s fine, too. Nancy’s a strong girl.
Before being cast in ST, Charlie Heaton had only held a handful of minor television roles. Speaking with the Standard about the audition process, Heaton said, “I sent in an audition tape and then found out they wanted to know more about me and where I had come from. They ended up Skyping me from a Byron Burger in Hammersmith — it was the weirdest thing. They said they were looking for people who weren’t necessarily known actors, and I told them how much I related to this character as I was from a working class background and really into music. I was flown over to the US for a screen test and got the role very quickly. Then it came out and almost overnight it became a phenomenon.”
Heaton recently finished filming the role of Cannonball in The New Mutants.
4. Heaton Was Recently Denied Entry into the US Because Traces of Cocaine Were Allegedly Found in His Luggage
Last week, Charlie Heaton was denied entry to the US after traces of cocaine were allegedly found in his luggage.
On Friday, Deadline reported that Heaton released a statement in regards to the incident. The statement read:
My planned travel to the U.S. last week was affected by an issue at U.S. immigration, and I am working to rectify it as soon as possible. I do want to clarify that I was not arrested or charged with a crime, and cooperated fully with the U.S. officials at LAX. I’m sorry to all the fans and my Stranger Things family for missing the premiere. We are all so proud of this season and I would never want this story to negatively impact the show.
In a statement obtained by ET, a Border Patrol Agent said, “Privacy concerns prevent U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) from discussing individual cases of travelers arriving at U.S. ports of entry. Foreign nationals may be inadmissible due to the commission of a crime involving drug possession. A violation, conspiracy to violate or simply an attempt to violate any U.S. State, federal or any foreign government controlled substance violation renders a foreign national inadmissible to the United States … CBP officers treat all international travelers with integrity, respect and professionalism while keeping the highest standards of security.”
On October 30, a source told US Weekly that Heaton allegedly has a son with ex-girlfriend Akiko Matsuura.
Teen Vogue said that Charlie and his ex reportedly became parents in late 2014, and that the son now lives in London with Akiko. Heaton has not confirmed the news publicly.
5. Fans Have Responded Positively to the Rumored Relationship
Fans have gone to social media to share their support for Dyer and Heaton’s relationship.
Fans have also gone to Twitter to record personal encounters with the supposed couple. In July, one fan wrote, “Omfg heart attack just walked by Charlie Heaton and Natalie Dyer.” A few months earlier, another ST fan posted, “Just saw Charlie Heaton and Natalie Dyer from Stranger Things on the street so.”
