Benjilock entered the Shark Tank with its padlocks that use fingerprint technology. They use a touchscreen and are rechargeable.
We interviewed founder Robbie Cabral who started the company in 2015 after listening to his fellow gym-goers’ security concerns. His patented design has already won the 2017 CES Innovation Award in the Smart Home category and was recently nominated for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the country’s highest honor for achievement in technology.
The product is not yet for sale, but the LA-based entrepreneur said, “Everyone can sign-up and follow me through BenjiLock.com. As the company moves forward, I’ll make sure to update every second of it! There’s a wide array of retailers interested, but I’m hoping to find the right partners to continue this never-ending journey.”
Here’s what else he told us about…
How the Idea Came About
I had a marketing job for a consumer technology company and then an opportunity came to my plate to become an assistant marketing director for a real estate company…Sadly, six months into it, I was laid off in the month of December…The same day I got laid off, my daughter was born…I was extremely happy, but being laid off also made me feel very depressed, so during that experience I became overweight. I thought to myself, “There has to be a better way to get back on track,” so I decided to start exercising and going to the gym to get myself back on track. That’s how BenjiLock was born. I noticed how people were using their lockers on a daily basis, their rants and concerns, so with the consumer in mind, I decided to create a solution for the issues they were having.
Advice for Future Contestants & Nerves in the ‘Tank’
Follow your passion, be yourself and go with your gut! Regardless of the outcome, stepping into the Tank is already a huge accomplishment! That’s why for me, it’s the true American Dream…[I was] not only nervous, but anxious. Believe it or not, the Tank is the real deal. Once you step inside of it, there’s no turning back!
Developing the 1st Prototype
It took me a year or so to develop the first prototype. The hybrid technology into the padlock it’s what makes it truly unique. Not only did I research the space, but conducted a local survey with over 1,000 users and 99.9 percent loved the product, so after I noticed the reaction, I decided to unveil it at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Unveiling the innovation at CES in the month of January opened the doors to showcase not only the product, but the story around the grind and passion of bringing this idea to life. The simplicity of creating such a minimum viable product ended up being what made Benjilock special at the 50th anniversary of the show and beyond.
Plans for the Future
My main goal is to keep innovating in my field, amplify the BenjiLock’s product portfolio and bring the solution to market. The simplicity of this particular invention is that it can go beyond the traditional padlock and be embedded in multiple forms and ways of hybrid security solutions that would be extremely beneficial to a wide array of industries, inspiring future Americans and keeping the U.S. at the forefront of global innovation and technology. So with that being said, yes, there are definitely plans to introduce new products and solutions to the market!
